Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia, is a comedian and actor. Chieng
is currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He
also developed and is the star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International
Student, which debuted on ABC Australia (Australia) in the year 2017. Chieng
was born to an Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). He was
raised in Singapore and in the United States, living in Manchester, New
Hampshire from 1989 until 1994. Chieng performed in the comedy festival in
Melbourne, Australia in 2013 along with Trevor Noah. Chieng was then asked to
be a candidate for the role of Noah's Daily Show two years after. Chieng was
selected as one of the 10 most watched comics in the July issue of Variety. In
October, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversy surrounding a
Jesse Watters Fox News segment which was widely believed to be racist. Chieng
presented an expletive-laden critique of the segment on Fox News that was
deemed conservative by many. Chieng also visited New York City's Chinatown.
Watters had mocked the residents there and conducted respectful interviews in
Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The viral video was covered by the Washington
Post, Slate, and other media publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout in
his early years. Chieng has not been able to gain citizenship or permanent
residency in Australia despite living in Australia for ten years. Chieng made
an ad-lib about being cynophobic during 2018's Daily Show. But Chieng later
said that he's "100 100% not afraid of dogs" in an interview.
